I have to travel almost everyday on the old mahabalipuram road (OMR) as that is the only way to my college. The government seems to be calling it the IT highway but I call it the disaster highway.
I don’t think we should be calling it as a road itself, as I feel that it is only a pathway for the vehicles to travel. You can have a nice bumpy ride. You might feel like you have come to a amusement park. There are long stretches where there is no tar road. You have to travel on a pathway made of sand and stones which makes the whole area polluted with dust and people have to literally stop breathing while passing through that stretch. You can see bikers travelling with their face fully covered.
I agree the first few Kms of the road is made nicely but what about the rest 20 odd Kms? But even that first 2Kms lacks in quality, that road is bumpy and not smooth. The whole OMR was decent before this project started. Just for the sake of re-constructing the road to a 6-lane highway, they broke up the whole road and are working only the first few Kms. They have no problem but we have been suffering for the past one year. They were supposed to finish the project by last year I think but it looks like it’s only in the initial stages now.
The pace at which the work is going on, I think it will take more 5 years atleast for OMR to be re-constructed completely.
